Why a Prison Congregation?

Why not support an existing prison ministry or provide an additional chaplain?

--- It provides a means for American Christians to "visit the imprisoned"

Every week 5 to 15 persons from a neighboring congregation come to worship and fellowship with the inmate members

--- It attracts new recruits to Prison ministry

A congregation attracts hundreds of visitors per year. For 95+% this is their first experience in prison ministry

 ---

A bridge of emotional and spiritual support is developed with the outside church

The inmates experience membership in a large community of faith

 ---

It gives ownership to the inmates, creating growth in responsibility, leadership development, and cooperation

The inmate council makes programmatic decisions, as does any church council. It allows for "belonging" rather than spectating

 ---

It provides interpretation of some of the complex criminal justice issues to the members of the sponsoring denomination

This will enable Christians to have informed participation in the national debate taking place in America today

--- It provides an additional choice of worship style and theology, and opportunity for involvement to the Prison's religious program

 ---

It has stability and longevity typical of any congregation

The congregation's strength is derived from a community of faith, not from 1 or 2 key people
